2023 Web Lecture “Deciphering Azuma Kagami – History of the Kamakura Period Learned from Historical Materials”
In this course, we will take a bird's-eye view of the Kamakura period from "Azuma Kagami" as a historical material, and examine its compilation process and its characteristics from various angles.
Historical materials are lectures that provide hints for us to learn about history.
Continuing from last year, Professor Shinichiro Takahashi of the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo, who specializes in medieval history of Kamakura, will be in charge of the lecturer.

Vol.1 What is Azuma Kagami?

We will clarify how the history book "Azuma Kagami" was established and what kind of character it has.
2nd Minamoto no Yoritomo raising an army
November 11Sun (Sat)
15:10-16:10
We will examine how "Azuma Kagami" depicts the establishment of the Shogunate from Minamoto no Yoritomo's raising of an army.
3rd Jokyu War
November 18Sun (Sat)
14:00-15:00
I will consider the flow from the assassination of Minamoto no Sanetomo to the Jokyu War by comparing and examining "Azuma Kagami" and other historical materials.
4th Hoji Battle
November 18Sun (Sat)
15:10-16:10
The Hoji Battle and the achievements of Hojo Tokiyori will be clarified using the Azuma Kagami as the central historical source.

Mr. Shinichiro Takahashi
Graduated from the Department of National History, Faculty of Letters, University of Tokyo. Professor at the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo. Doctor of Letters. Specializes in medieval Japanese history, urban history, political history of the Kamakura period, etc.
